MARTA – Mixed Reality Art In Public Spaces
“New ideas for leading market media and creative industries in NRW” were searched for; The EU research project MARTA – Mixed Reality Art in Public Space was founded – one of 10 winning concepts that have an impact on other sectors and further advance the economy in NRW.
The aim of MARTA is to provide artists, technology experts and interested parties from cultural and business enterprises access to technical know-how and a creative mixed reality production.
As a research project, MARTA offers insights into the joint process of creating digital mixed-reality production environments for the design, installation and marketing of interactive artistic content in public spaces.
The network team of the EU research project MARTA consists of the Düsseldorf-based companies tennagels Medientechnik GmbH, LAVAlabs Moving Images GmbH & Co. KG, NRW-Forum gGmbH and the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences. Together, the alliance of partners have proved with their concept idea that the project will be decisive for the future development of media and creative industries in NRW.

WICKIE – INNOVATIONSHUB for digital media solutions in public spaces
WICKIE is one of the winners of CreativeMedia.NRW, an EFRE (European Regional Development Fund) funding competition of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2015.
The main concept of WICKIE is the development of interdisciplinary work processes, a prerequisite for this is the formation of a think tank from which future-oriented solutions for innovative media technology projects are devised.
The development of interdisciplinary work processes is effectively used in the INNOVATIONSHUB by the network partners tennagels Medientechnik, LAVAlabs Moving Images and the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.
In a common working space in the INNOVATIONSHUB, the synergies of the network partners tennagels Medientechnik, LAVAlabs Moving Images and the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences can be combined and used effectively.
The partners conceive a workspace that is made reality following the virtual presentation. Based on an adapted standard tool for collaborative work, the virtual workspace supports the bridging of spatial and temporal distances between the collaboration partners. For the targeted development of innovative ideas, the project partners specify a structured user-centered approach.
Innovations are defined, formulated and implemented in exemplary ways. The diverse competencies of the collaboration partners lead to completely new perspectives and the realization that the collaborative network INNOVATIONSHUB is an important aspect of successful innovations.
The INNOVATIONSHUB can thus be used as an additional own contribution to the EU research project “MARTA – Mixed Reality Art in Public Spaces”. For the presentation of the results of MARTA, the team is creating a series of different events.
One successful event of the INNOVATIONSHUB in the WICKI project is the Innovation Day which has been inspiring hundreds of visitors from the fields of business, science, architecture, entertainment, trade, art and culture with future-oriented developments every year since 2015.

The mysterious command centre of a spaceship offers the vividness of spectacular vision and perfectly stages the requirements of the CreativeMedia.NRW funding programme. The “Escape Room – Planet Search” shows the development of a future-oriented solution by network partners tennagels Medientechnik, LAVAlabs Moving Images and the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences. The common workspace offers an unparalleled creative space in which the synergy effects are optimally used.
LEAD-UP STORY BEHIND THE PLANET SEARCH
The starting point for developing ideas is a fictitious accident at a pharmaceutical company. Large quantities of highly toxic substances contaminate soil and drinking water. It is foreseeable that about 90% of the earth’s resources will be unusable. The population is not informed about the incident by governments in order to avoid mass panic. Therefore, the persons responsible are putting together a team of astronauts, botanists, mechanics, physicists and journalists as a secret rescue crew. Their mission is to find a suitable planet to bring new raw materials and clean drinking water back to earth and save humanity. Thanks to the latest technology, the planned project is successful. By developing a prototype, the spaceship manages to penetrate a promising galaxy.
After all players have learned the history leading up to the planet search, the roles are assigned. The group enters the room to take on the challenges of the planet search. The launch of the spaceship will be initiated and based on existing facts, the coordinates of a suitable planet must be determined. Large LED screens simulate front and side windows of the spaceship cockpit. The crew races through the galaxy towards the planets. The game master controls the communication with the control station on Earth and can provide the commander with additional information or assistance if necessary. There are three different planets to choose from, on which the necessary soil samples can be taken. For example, if the team decides on the magma planet, an LED floor in the vicinity of the cockpit will suggest a lava flow, fans will provide an appropriate draft of air and atmospheric music will underline the dramatic situation.
The game is considered won when the right planet has been discovered, the valuable soil samples have been taken and analyzed there, all crew members have returned to the spaceship in time and the crew has successfully landed back on Earth.
Intelligent all-rounder – multifunctional dining table furniture
An interdisciplinary team brings in-depth knowledge from different fields of research and activity and develops new machine learning technologies for object recognition. For example, the use of sensors and actuators turns ordinary furniture into smart, intelligent everyday objects. In addition to the complex technical development, research partners face the challenge of determining the usability and work facilitation by PraktikAPP in everyday life.
The research project is a dynamic process, a Living Lab, with innovative concepts for implementing the interactivity of a smart table. The PraktikApp is designed to create closeness even at great distances and allow users to interact via sounds, projections, gestures and movements.
The central function of the smart table is performed by multiple functions that fit seamlessly into the individual infrastructure of everyday life and enrich our home with an intelligent centrepiece.
